Beyond the School: Bringing Oral Health Care to Our Elders
Government School Dental Therapists extend their community service during the school vacation The school vacation provides Government School Dental Therapists with a valuable opportunity to extend their professional services beyond the school environment and contribute to the oral health and wellbeing of the wider community. As part of this commitment, School Dental Therapists are conducting oral health awareness programmes for residents of Elders’ Homes, creating opportunities to promote better oral health among older adults. The programmes focus on the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene throughout life, proper tooth-brushing techniques, denture care, healthy dietary practices, the importance of regular dental examinations, and recognizing common oral health problems at an early stage. Special attention is given to the needs of older adults, including those who depend on caregivers for their daily oral hygiene. Caregivers and staff are also provided with practical guidance on supporting residents to maintain good oral health and comfort. These programmes demonstrate that oral health promotion has no age limit. While School Dental Therapists have a primary responsibility towards schoolchildren, their knowledge and skills can also make a meaningful contribution to community health. By utilizing the school vacation period for community outreach, Dental Therapists are strengthening the connection between oral healthcare and the wider community while promoting the principle that every individual deserves access to oral health education and care throughout life. From children to elders, from schools to communities — Government School Dental Therapists continue to serve for healthier smiles and healthier lives.
