School Dental Service in Sri Lanka
The school dental service is specially designed and launched for improving the oral health of school children in Sri Lanka which is primarily managed by school dental therapists (SDT) under the direct technical supervision of RDS and direct administrative supervision of the Medical Officer of Health.
SDT provides preventative oral healthcare for children aged between 3-13 years. Their target groups for treatment are children in grade 1, grade 4 and grade 7 classes in schools where there are more than 200 students and in schools with less than 200 school children all the children below 13 years.

Ceylon was the first to apply for assistance in the field of dental health under the Colombo Plan. In response New Zealand accepted a number of Ceylonese girls for training in New Zealand as school dental nurses. Funds were provided for the purchase of a hostel at Maharagama in Colombo and for the construction of a school dental nurses.
The Government School Dental Therapist Association of Sri Lanka has played a vital role in improving the dental health of school children and continues to be a key player in the country's public health sector.

They educate students and parents about the importance of good oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups.
