Oral Cancer Awareness Programs Conducted by School Dental Therapists

Colombo School Dental Therapists conducted a series of Oral Cancer Awareness Programs for staff members working in government institutions including Municipal Councils, Pradeshiya Sabhas, Post Offices, Bus Depots, and other government offices. The primary objective of these programs was to educate government employees about the early signs and symptoms of oral cancer, major risk factors, and the importance of early detection and prevention. Oral cancer remains a significant public health concern in Sri Lanka, mainly due to the widespread use of tobacco products, betel chewing, smoking, and alcohol consumption. During the awareness sessions, School Dental Therapists provided educational lectures and interactive discussions regarding common risk factors associated with oral cancer. Participants were educated on the harmful effects of smoking, smokeless tobacco, betel chewing with areca nut, and excessive alcohol consumption. Special emphasis was given to encouraging healthy lifestyle changes and avoiding harmful oral habits. The programs also focused on recognizing early warning signs of oral cancer, including: * Non-healing mouth ulcers * Red or white patches inside the mouth * Difficulty in swallowing * Lumps or thickening inside the mouth * Persistent pain or burning sensation Participants were informed about the importance of seeking early professional advice when abnormal oral changes are noticed. School Dental Therapists also demonstrated simple self-examination techniques to help individuals identify suspicious oral lesions at an early stage. Educational leaflets, posters, and oral health promotion materials were distributed during the programs to further strengthen awareness among staff members. The sessions encouraged participants to maintain good oral hygiene practices and attend regular oral examinations for early detection of oral diseases. The active participation and positive response from government office staff highlighted the importance of community-based oral health education programs. These initiatives demonstrate the valuable contribution of School Dental Therapists in promoting public awareness and supporting the prevention and early detection of oral cancer within the community.
